HELLO

Movie List for Women Empowerment

In conjunction with this month’s issue, why not make a list of movies that spotlights women empowerment? From Disney to Dramas, every girl will enjoy watching these movies, feeling motivated after, ready to take on the world!

1) Erin Brockovich
Meet Erin Brockovich; an unemployed, single mother of three, who has no luck in the job department. That is, until she persuades her lawyer to turn that around, to make it up for a recent failed lawsuit. Seen as a joke in her trashy clothes and blunt attitude, Erin struggles to fit in. She soon proves everyone wrong, though, when she leads one of the biggest lawsuits in American history against a multi-billionaire company.

2) Bend it Like Beckham
A comedy about bending the rules to reach your goal, Bend It Like Beckham explores into the world of women's football, as well as the dreams of a girl named Jessminder Bhamral. Set in Hounslow, West London and Hamburg, the film shows how Jessminder has her heart set on a future in a professional football career. Despite that, talent doesn't seem to be enough; especially when her parents would want her to hang up the football boots, and just find a find partner to be with.

3) Mulan
Of course, what is an empowering movie list without at least one from Disney? Mulan is a classic when it comes to empowering women. Disguised as a boy, Mulan goes to war on her family’s behalf to protect her ill father. Her identity is soon discovered, but she still persisted to follow, after she heard of an attack plotted towards the emperor. Having no one taking notice of her only because she is a woman, she decided to take things into her own hands. With the help of some friends, Mulan helped to save the emperor and the whole nation.

4) Norma Rae
Norma Rae is a lively yet trusted wife and mother in an Alabama mill town. Like any other woman there, she works at the Henley mill, where they weave cloths every day with no real purpose ahead. However, her ordinary life changes when she and her colleagues meet Reuben, a smart-mouthed labour organiser from New York. Reuben teaches the Henley crew about solidarity in a place where union and trouble are under the same meaning. Norma, convinced by his idea, goes against all odds to achieve her goals.

5) Legally Blonde
It would be a lie if you say you didn’t see this one coming, - it’s a classic! Elle woods has good intentions, and is proved to be very intelligent if she outs her mind to it. After her break up with Warner, a man from a successful heritage, she is still convinced that they belong together. Determined to get him back, she works hard to get into the same Harvard University, for the sake of him. Things don’t work out after Elle sees his true colours. Instead, she turns the tables around. The ending proves that Elle Woods is not a girl to be messed with. Beauty and brains, in fact, do work well as a pair.

6) A League of Their Own
The film is set in the rough times of World War II. It follows two sisters, who are raised in a farm, in which they both share the same passion for baseball. Since majority of young men are fighting in the axis, a new female league is opened up. The sisters get recruited and one thing led to another, they travel to Chicago. The whole team is formed and they are coached by Jimmy Dugan, who is really embarrassed to be coaching a girls’ team. Later on in the movie, the team proves him wrong and shows effort and courage like no other teams before, changing his perspective on girls.

7) The Princess and the Frog
You guessed it, another Disney film! This classic tale follows a girl named Tiana, who dreams of opening up a restaurant since young. Inspired by her father, Tiana starts saving up for her restaurant. Soon, Tiana learns to never take the easy way out of her problems, when she is cursed into a frog. Having breaking the spell, Tiana and the prince fall in love. The restaurant is then built slowly, but surely. In the end, the couple lives happily, greeting customers into their full house restaurant.

8) Iron Man 2
When Tony Stark’s hidden identity as the city’s hero unveiled, everybody begins to watch his every move, just as a paparazzi would to a celebrity. Not handling the pressure well, Tony forms an alliance with Pepper Potts to save his military inventions. In the end, Potts, Tony’s secretary, saves the day with her swift thinking and intelligence. Only until then, does Tony realise just how dependant he is on Potts. Sometimes, a big suit is nothing without a big brain.

9) Clueless
Cher is rich, naïve girl, who knows how to get what she wants. When she fails to convince her teacher into raising her grades, Cher and her friend decides to play cupid and match him with another teacher. She also gives a new girl a new look, in an attempt of matching her with a fit boyfriend. Seeing friends turning into couples and in love, owing to her, Cher starts to crave for that affection as well. After having a ‘spiritual’ makeover, Cher finds that there is more to life than beauty products, the latest trends and boys.

10) The Princess Diaries 2
This is the last, but most definitely not the least, movie in the list. This is my personal favourite! A sequel to the classic, Princess Mia has just turned 21 and is supposed to succeed her grandmother as the Queen of Genovia. Along the way, some selfish people try to get in the way of this happening. Viscount Mabrey, who has a nephew also in line to be the ruler, was one of them. He reminded everyone that a princess must first have a prince before becoming Queen. Hence, Mia is given a month to find a suitor and marry him. Here, Viscount uses his nephew, Nicholas, to distract princess Mia in finding a suitor. This plan is found to work until Nicholas backs out, gaining true feelings for the princess. In the end, Mia gives an empowering speech on the independence of a woman in ruling a country on her own, hoping to change the minds of the parliament. She wins the hearts of everyone and at last, become Queen.

Now, why not you grab a bag of popcorn, sit back, and lift yourself up by watching these movies to boost the day. I don’t know about you, but I feel like watching Princess Diaries 2 again.
