“I’m going to do what I want to do. I’m going to be who I really am. I don't want other
people to decide who I am. I want to decide that for myself” - Emma Watson
For this issue of SPARKS, there was no woman who could be a more perfect fit for our witch’s hat than the one and only Emma Watson. We know her as Hermione Granger, an English muggle-born witch who chose to define her own unique character. Hermione taught us to be brilliant, witty and to never forget a little humour. Hermione Granger, although a fictional character, became a role model to many young girls and she would not have been if it weren’t for Emma Watson. The way Emma portrayed this role was simply magnificent! It was exactly how the readers of the Harry Potter book series imagined Hermione to be, even better if anything.
Other than her amazing role as Hermione, Emma Watson has also contributed so generously to the community. She was appointed a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helped launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe. HeForShe is a campaign which calls for men to advocate gender equality. “I’m hoping to do some good in the world” says Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She truly is one wicked awesome inspiration.
Defending gender equality, Emma Watson gave a powerful speech that quickly spiralled into a threatening nude photo attack. Watson is doing her best to become one of the prime celebrity faces of feminism in the world. Her speech was all about gender and inequality issues that still don't receive enough attention. The whole speech was a flawless, personal reflection on feminism, gender, equality and activism. Watson is standing up for a cause that means a lot to her with lots of self-expressive humour to go with it. “You might think, ‘Who is this Harry Potter girl? What is she doing in the UN?’ And its a really good question — I’ve been asking myself the same thing,” she said, making her speech seem more inspirational. She's taking a stand, and she's taking a stand NOW. “In my nervousness for this speech and my moments of doubt, I’ve told myself firmly, ‘If not me, who? If not now, when?’”
Emma is known throughout the world to be sassy on the red carpet. “It’s not like I practice walking down a carpet before every award show or premier. I don’t know how or why but whenever I start to walk down that red, velvet carpet, I just feel a boost in my confidence. I really just start strutting down that thing as though it’s my baby!” Emma Watson has become quite the fashion and beauty muse. She is often admired for her take on preppy off-duty style. She has had every single hairstyle of this century: edgy, sexy, bleached, waved, straightened, long, short, you name it!
In a similar manner as Hermione, Emma Watson takes her education very seriously. Not only did the actress graduate from Brown University with a degree in English Literature, she was also said to have possessed a brilliant academic mind and proved to be a gifted student. Watson says “You can never have the knowledge of knowing everything that exists in this Universe, but you can pick up as much possible. That depends on your initiative” or as Hermione Granger would say “I take every possible chance I get to go the library. It’s where the knowledge grows, where the mind is fed”.
